break apart school, rebuild education
In order to progress education for lifelong learners, the current school system needs to imbue the qualities of Open Source Learning and become an interconnected mesh for education. Orbi-tech, a school that switches the norms, creates an open environment for freedom of expression and interaction through fun, share, and explore.
Open Source Learning is the backbone behind our school. This system of learning encourages interaction through a variety of means and does not limit the extent of who can participate. Sharing ideas through interaction increases the speed for improvement and benefitting those ideas.
Making education fun, expecially through the architecture, is an important aspect for Open Source to succeed. In Orbi-tech, the program of the high school is divided into three cohorts based on touch, sound, and smell/taste, creating multi-story spaces and overlapping functions. However, they are all harmoniously connected through the capsules, probes, and orb; as well as site, the last sensory experience. How students learn in Orbi-tech is what makes this high school fun.
So how do students learn in Orbi-tech? Using the ME, WE, and US concept, Orbi_tech demonstrates the different scales of learners, as well as, the multiple modes of sharing. In Orbi-tech, students are able to learn through the capsules, probes, and the orb, which correlates respectively with ME, WE, and US. If you want to learn more in depth, check out PHASE ONE or the image below. These three systems make Orbi-tech special and unlike any other high school. The relationship between moving or static allows students to have their own identity while being interconnected as a whole. These systems are integrated with the architecture and provide students with a way to play and explore.
This movement is necessary for 21st Century learning because it allows for the spread of ideas to be faster and more engaging, since it goes through the entire school. Having teachers act more as guides for learning is also crucial. Teachers could integrate the ideas from the capsules or have students take the ideas from the capsules and benefit it in their own way. Ideas are scared and can be found everywhere, but being able to share those ideas…build those ideas…make the ideas stronger is 21st Century learning. If students are surrounded with different ideas, they can explore and learn about something new. Orbi-tech is designed to spark a passion (or hobby) for lifelong learners in order for them to become self-motivated to learn and continue exploring. In Orbi-tech, students do not have to choose their path, they just play; but by playing, students have a chance of unveiling something that they may not have known that they enjoyed to do.
High schools need to be fun for students and teachers (even the community). Orbi-tech is an idea that brings playfulness back into the atmosphere through moving vestibules, gondolas, and architecture. It is a little chaotic, but learning is too. By going through the program and exploring in Orbi-tech, we hope students become more self-motivated learners and feel connected with their own self and as a whole community.
