As a happy newly wed couple, Courtney and I have adopted a beautiful baby: Overlap. We’re so excited!
- What is your favorite part of this project and why?
The indoor/outdoor connections on a human level
Figuring out the doors that I really liked, like the garage doors and rotating doors
Also exploring the landscaping on the exterior
- What would you most like to change?
Large scale – shapes of rooms (angles, etc.)
Foundation and residence were ignored – integrating the residence
Developing the hub bar shape
Develop outdoor to outdoor experience (eliminate cave area)
Commons can be more celebrated
- Is there anything you strongly feel should stay on this project?
The hubs (programming for a variation of people)
The double courtyard system
- What programming do you see happening in the media and product design?
Studio environment and woodshop
Product – large scale production branching out to courtyard
Media – how theatre would use space
- How do you see the role of wellness in your design?
Outdoor court – making outdoor space usable
Recess-like area rather than designated gym
- What is included in each of your hubs?
Systematic break out rooted in interactions, so you can join spaces to accommodate more or less people
There are spaces for groups of 30, 25, 20, 10, and 5 people
- Can you expand on the idea of overlap?
How does shape allow for common spaces and secluded spaces
Two courtyards linked and celebrating commons
Interest groups on ground floor and hubs above
- How did the site and typology studies influence your design, especially in terms of form?
The finger typology was appealing because it created a common inner space, with more isolated spaces branching out
This helped with making a variety of spaces
- Why did you choose the Valley site?
My typology fit better with the valley orientation, and the coastal site posed too many ECS challenges
- How did you address daylighting/glazing/ shading throughout the project?
Calculated overhang size and vertical fins
Tested out many Safeira models
